At a young age Leslie Pozen knew she would be working with textiles. She began experimenting with them in grade school where she became an avid seamstress and by the end of high school Leslie set a life-long goal to become a fashion designer.
Her passion for fashion landed her at college in Minnesota with a minor in Art. She began creating her own clothing and sold her one-of-a-kind pieces to her friends and acquaintances.
In 1991, Leslie moved to Chicago where she was accepted at The International Academy of Merchandising and Design. At that point she began creating women's and children's clothing and baby items. She sold them through boutique shows, which she did successfully but she longed to continue to evolve creatively.
Two years ago Leslie's began inadvertently making purses. She wanted to offer a product to women that was artistically unique, functional and fun.
Experimenting with handbag designs, she knew her new patterns seemed oddly familiar. Leslie reviewed her college art portfolios and was amazed to find that her new handbag designs were very similar to the circular patterns and shapes that she used many years ago.
Today, Leslie's company ellu makes hand-made creations that revolve around that same circular pattern that she began with in college. Symbolizing life, freedom and femininity Leslie's handbags are more than an accessory, they are works of art. “I enjoy creating functional art. Art that can be used and worn” says Leslie.
When asked who her inspirations are Leslie says: “I am very much inspired by those who live their passion and are not afraid to express themselves. Regarding my art, I'm inspired by so much around me, but mostly anything that looks fresh, innovative and different.” Which is evident in her one-of-a-kind creations.
